Application Introduction

If you often search for Japan travel guides, popular restaurant reviews, daily fashion tips for girls, beauty and skincare tips, home rental renovations, or even if you’re planning to buy a new phone, get a camera, or put together a fitness plan soon, chances are you’ve come across content from REDnote before. Back then, many people referred to it directly as the "Chinese version of Instagram," but after using it myself for quite a while, I think that description only scratches the surface.

Instagram is more like "sharing what I did today with friends and family"; REDnote, on the other hand, is closer to "I have a problem now, let’s see how others solved it." You might follow friends or favorite celebrities on Instagram, but on REDnote, you often directly search for things like "5 days in Tokyo, 4 nights itinerary," "small Taipei apartment rental renovation," "sun protection for oily skin," "iPhone camera settings," and then read one note after another until late at night.

This is what makes REDnote most unique—it’s not just a social platform, but also a powerful search tool. Add to that "product recommendations," e-commerce shopping, brand partnerships, and content from regular users (KOCs), and you get a complete system for making life decisions. Its official position is now "a gathering place for 300 million people’s interests." As of 2026, REDnote is still available on Taiwan’s App Store, supports Traditional Chinese, and has an average rating of about 4.9 stars.

However, when Taiwanese users use REDnote in 2026, they can’t just consider whether it’s "easy to use." Since December 4, 2025, Taiwan’s authorities have imposed a one-year network resolution suspension or access restriction order on REDnote, due to issues related to fraud cases, platform compliance with law enforcement, and cybersecurity concerns. As of August 2026, this restriction is still in effect.

Therefore, this article will not only introduce REDnote’s various functions, download methods, platform content, and marketing models, but also explain clearly Taiwan’s access restrictions, VPN-related issues, data preservation, and privacy risks.

I. What is REDnote: Brand & Platform Introduction

A. Founding Background & Development History

REDnote was launched in 2013, and it wasn’t the all-encompassing lifestyle social platform it is today.

In its early days, the platform focused more on "overseas shopping and consumer guides," where users shared what they bought in different countries, which brands were worth buying, and how much prices varied across regions.

Later, the platform gradually realized that what people actually cared about wasn’t just basic product info—it was the real-life experiences shared by regular users. So the platform’s content expanded beyond overseas shopping to cover: beauty
fashion
travel
food
home living
fitness
parenting
career
tech gadgets
automobiles
learning

Nowadays, you can find almost anything on it.

This is what I find interesting about REDnote. Many apps become more entertainment-focused as they grow, but even though REDnote has lots of short videos, the habit of "search REDnote first when you have a question" still holds strong.

B. Positioning & Features of the "Chinese Version of Instagram"

Calling it the "Chinese version of Instagram" isn’t totally wrong.

Both platforms have: photos, short videos, follow functionality, like functionality, comment functionality, direct messaging, personal profile pages, etc.

But the differences in actual usage are huge.

Instagram’s core is "relationships + casual updates," while REDnote is more "content + interest-driven."

You might not even know the blogger who posted a note, but if their content answers your question exactly, you’ll stop and read it carefully.

So REDnote’s key feature isn’t who has the most followers—it’s its massive library of "search-oriented notes."

For example, if I don’t want a KOL’s review today, but I need to buy a coffee maker, I’d search directly: "coffee maker recommendations," "small-apartment-friendly coffee makers," "pitfalls of semi-automatic coffee machines," then choose after reading a dozen notes or so.

That’s the biggest difference between REDnote and Instagram.

II. Core Functions & Layout Features of REDnote

A. Masonry-Style Note Layout Design

The most recognizable feature of REDnote’s homepage is its two-column masonry layout.

Each note usually first shows: the cover image, title, author’s information.

And more.

Besides content quality, the number of likes is also one of the key factors people use to judge whether a note is worth referencing or not.

Unlike other platforms, here you don’t have to finish reading one note before switching—you can scroll through tons of note covers at once and efficiently find what you want.

The biggest upside of this interface design is how fast you can find life, travel, or food guides—no more wasting time waiting for page loads.

For example, if you search "Tokyo food", results will show covers of notes on yakiniku, ramen, unique coffee shops, even must-buy items at local convenience stores. You don’t need to click in—just by looking at the images, you can tell which ones you want to dive deeper into.

That said, this design has a clear downside:...

It’s way too easy to keep scrolling—you can easily lose half an hour without realizing it

When you scroll, the next content you’ll likely find interesting is always at the bottom of your screen. Before you know it, you’ve scrolled too far and can’t stop.

Even more importantly, the platform’s recommendation algorithm will get better and better at figuring out what you like.

If you scroll three notes about room makeovers in one day, your homepage will probably be flooded with that content the next day.

Things like organization hacks, practical furniture, pretty lamps, desk decor ideas, and before/after makeover photos will all pop up on your homepage.

B. The Unique Blend of "Grass Planting" Social and Shopping

When it comes to REDnote, "grass planting" is a term you can’t avoid—it’s almost become a nickname for the platform itself.

Simply put: if you had no intention of buying something, but after seeing a real user’s experience, you suddenly feel like getting it—that’s what everyone calls "being grass-planted".

REDnote’s strongest point is that even commercial content looks nothing like traditional ads—you never feel like you’re being sold to.

For example, a note might have a title like "Testing 5 Foundations for Oily Acne-Prone Skin in Summer" and naturally mention a brand’s product—nothing feels forced.

As long as the content is a real user’s experience, not just a straight promotion, people won’t just scroll past like they would a pop-up banner ad—they’ll actually click in to read.

Now REDnote’s official store even uses the line "One-click grass planting, easy checkout"—it’s clear that shopping experience is a huge part of what makes this platform work.

III. REDnote Download & Installation Guide

A. iOS & Android Download Steps

Installing REDnote on iPhone or iPad is super easy.

Just open the App Store on your device and search for:

REDnote

Find the app called "REDnote - Your Life Interest Community" and you’re good to go.

Pay attention to confirm the developer:

Xingin

Once you confirm it’s right, download and install it—done!

As of August 2026, REDnote still has an official page on Taiwan’s App Store, the app is regularly updated, works with iOS 13 and above, and offers a Traditional Chinese interface—super convenient.

For Android users, open Google Play and search for "REDnote".

The official package name is:

com.xingin.xhs

The developer is listed as "Xingyin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd." As of now, there are recent update logs on Google Play—this is an app that’s being actively optimized.

Here’s a super important reminder:

Just because you can search for REDnote in your app store doesn’t mean you can actually connect to and use the app right now in your current location

App availability on stores is a separate thing from local internet restrictions—don’t assume you can use it just because you found it.

B. Web & Desktop Version Usage

You don’t have to use REDnote only on your phone, by the way.

The official website lets you search and browse some public notes—perfect for anyone just looking up guides.

For example, when I plan trips on my laptop, I open Google Maps alongside REDnote to find local restaurants and spots—it’s super efficient.

For Mac users, if you have an Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) Mac, the REDnote version on App Store is already compatible. Still, the full feature set works better on the mobile app overall.

To start with, if you only want to read notes, the web version is totally enough—there’s no need to install the app. But if you want to do any of these things: edit and post your own notes, edit and upload videos, reply to direct messages, manage your saved content, or watch live streams—then the mobile app has all the features you need to cover every use case.

IV. Download & Registration Guide for Users in Taiwan

A. Registration Process with Taiwanese Phone Numbers & +886 Country Code

If you’re in a location where REDnote is accessible and your internet works, you’ll mainly need a phone number to receive verification codes when signing up. The international country code for Taiwanese phone numbers is:

+886

For example, if your Taiwanese number is 0912 345 678, when entering the international format, remove the leading 0, so it becomes +886 912 345 678—just drop the first 0 from your original number.

If you keep not receiving the verification code, don’t click repeatedly—this could cause issues. You can check a few things first: Did you enter the correct country code? Is your phone number formatted properly?

Common issues people run into when signing up for REDnote: Is it affected by SMS spam settings? Did your carrier block international SMS? Or did you request too many verification codes too quickly, triggering a system risk flag?

One extra note: REDnote has tightened up account security a lot in recent years. Many international users run into extra identity checks and account security controls when signing up or logging in. So after you set up your account, quickly sort out your regular login methods and security info to avoid problems later.

B. Third-Party Login Options (WeChat, QQ, Apple ID, etc.)

Depending on your OS version, the REDnote app update, and even your region, the login options you see might be different. Common login options include: phone number, WeChat, QQ, Apple ID, or logins via other platforms.

But a big heads up: don’t use old tutorials from five years ago on the internet for 2026! The app updates its features over time, and even the position of third-party login buttons might change with new versions.

My long-standing rule: Always use a phone number you keep long-term. Use third-party logins only as backups. That way, even if you change your phone later, you won’t get stuck with that “one button used to work, now it’s gone” hassle.

V. Usage Restrictions in Taiwan & VPN Solutions

A. The Taiwan Block Controversy & Cybersecurity Testing Background

This is definitely the key thing Taiwanese users need to understand right now.

In December 2025, Taiwan’s authorities announced that REDnote had over 3 million users in Taiwan, but failed all 15 cybersecurity testing indicators. Additionally, from 2024 to November 2025, the police received 1,706 fraud cases related to REDnote, with over NT$247 million in property losses. Based on this, the authorities issued an order to suspend domain name resolution or restrict access under the “Act for the Prevention and Control of Fraudulent Crimes,” with a tentative one-year validity.

In April 2026, the police announced that after the suspension measure took effect, the number of REDnote-related fraud cases and property losses had dropped significantly.

Besides that, REDnote was also listed as a high-risk app in earlier cybersecurity checks, with authorities highlighting concerns about its collection of sensitive info, device data access, and data transmission.

So when people say “REDnote doesn’t work properly in Taiwan” now, it’s not just about regional copyright—it’s about the ongoing administrative restrictions and multiple measures against fraud and cybersecurity risks.

B. VPN Downloads & How to Bypass Restrictions

When people can’t connect, the first solution they think of is: “Just use a VPN, right?” Technically, VPNs can change some of your internet traffic paths and connect through a different exit location.

But as of August 2026, Taiwan’s order to suspend resolution and restrict access for REDnote is still within its originally scheduled validity period. So I won’t recommend or publish step-by-step tutorials on how to bypass current restrictions.

If you're in a country or region with no relevant restrictions, the safest way to download apps is still through the official App Store, Google Play, or REDnote's official website. Never download so-called "Taiwan-unlocked versions", "VPN-free cracked versions", or APK files from unknown sources!

For users in Taiwan, it's more important to first understand current policies and related risks, rather than just installing another high-permission app simply because an online influencer recommends "a certain VPN that definitely works"!

Also, VPNs themselves may access a large amount of your internet traffic data.

To use an app with security disputes while handing over all your internet traffic to a free VPN operated by an unknown company — this approach actually brings bigger security risks instead.

VI. REDnote's Content Themes & Popular Categories

A. Fashion, Beauty, Food & Travel Guides

The most mature and popular fields on REDnote have remained these: fashion, beauty, food, and travel, until now.

These categories are super popular because they're perfect for being presented in the "picture + short text" format.

Take travel guides for example. You don't need to read a long article of thousands of words. Just see a title like "3 Days 2 Nights in Osaka Itinerary", the first picture is the overall schedule, the second is transportation methods, the third is accommodation suggestions, the fourth is must-try restaurants — you can quickly grasp the core points.

The beauty category is even more so. The same lipstick is shot on different skin tones (yellow skin, white skin) and under different lighting (indoor light, natural light), which is way more referenceable than official brand product images.

B. Career, Apartment Hunting, Fitness & Digital Tech Content

Me

Maybe many people still think of REDnote as "a beauty app for girls", but that's far from its whole look anymore.

In recent years, REDnote has expanded its fields significantly. Besides the original beauty content, it covers multiple directions like career development, AI tool reviews, beginner programming, 3C product tests, fitness plans, home decor proposals, apartment hunting pitfalls, car buying/selling experiences, and more.

Many people even directly use REDnote as a simple search engine. For example, when wanting to buy an M4 MacBook Air, you don't always search for professional reviews like "M4 MacBook Air review" on Google first — instead, you can search on REDnote like "Is the M4 MacBook Air worth buying?", and see real users sharing their desktop setups, actual battery life, weight feelings, and real pitfalls they encountered. This kind of life-focused content is exactly the core advantage of REDnote that's hard to be replaced by other platforms.

VII. Analysis of REDnote's Main User Groups

A. Female Users Aged 18 to 34 as the Main Body

In the early days, REDnote did center around young female users, with beauty, fashion, and lifestyle consumption-related content as its main focus. But by 2026, if you still one-sidedly say it's "an app only for girls aged 18 to 34", it doesn't fit the actual situation. The official platform now positions itself as "a gathering place for 300 million people's life interests", and its content scope has expanded a lot; third-party studies still show that female usage features are prominent, especially beauty-related KOL content, which is highly correlated with the proportion of female users on the platform. Meanwhile, post-2000s and post-1990s are still important groups for REDnote. For example, QuestMobile's youth group study mentioned that REDnote has quite impressive usage time among some post-2000s people.

B. Gen Z & Cross-Region Chinese User Distribution

Another obvious change in recent years is the growth of overseas Chinese-speaking users. No matter in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, or Chinese communities in North America, people can find relevant life-sharing content on REDnote. Especially topics like travel, study abroad, immigration, and life experiences are very suitable for cross-region users to communicate. For example, searching keywords like "Tokyo apartment hunting", "Australia working holiday", "Canada study abroad", "Hong Kong one-day tour" can get real notes from local users. The content on REDnote may not be as comprehensive as official tourism websites, but because it's full of small daily details, it brings higher practicality instead.

VIII. Comparison Between REDnote & Instagram

A. Differences in Content Form & Algorithm Logic

Instagram's algorithm mainly pushes content around "who you follow", "who you interact with", and "whose Reels you watch often". But although REDnote also refers to interaction data, search intent and interest content have very high weight. Even a regular user's note, as long as it happens to match the search needs of a large number of users, it may suddenly get amazing exposure. So REDnote creators usually attach great importance to: titles that fit search habits, clear eye-catching covers, accurate keywords, tags corresponding to the topic, and content practicality. This has obvious differences from Instagram's logic of "personal brand building + fan relationship maintenance".

B. Use Scenarios & User Behavior Comparison

I personally distinguish between the two platforms like this: when I want to see what my friends are up to, I open Instagram. If I’m trying to decide if a restaurant is worth waiting in line for, I search on REDnote. To follow a celebrity’s daily life, I go with Instagram. When I need real tips on saving time waiting at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, I look for genuine guides on REDnote. For sharing nice photos I took that day, I post on Instagram. For organizing personal experiences like a "First-Time Home Inspection Mistake List", I choose REDnote. Actually, these two platforms don’t replace each other—users just have totally different mindsets for using them.

IX. REDnote’s Commercial Marketing & Product Promotion Mechanism

A. "Little Yellow Cart" Shopping Links & Brand Partnerships

A big part of REDnote’s commercial value comes from "product seeding" — users view content, get interested, search for the product, and finally complete a purchase. The platform has deeply integrated content, online stores, live streams, and product purchases now. Some notes or live streams directly show product entry points, which are commonly known as Little Yellow Cart, product cards, and other shopping elements. But content that actually drives conversions isn’t usually like: "This product is the best in the world, buy it now." Instead, it’s like:

I used it myself for three weeks, and three parts felt super useful, while the other two were just mediocre.

This is exactly the core of REDnote’s promoted KOC marketing model.

Because these KOCs’ posts look just like regular consumers’ daily shares, the trust they build is way higher than those hard-selling ad contents.

B. Dandelion Project & KOC Operation Strategy

When brands want to officially collaborate with influencers, they almost always use the "Dandelion" platform.

That’s right—this is REDnote’s official platform specifically for handling commercial partnerships.

By 2026, the Dandelion platform still offers rich collaboration tools including brand onboarding, influencer marketplace, customized commercial orders, bulk business orders, beta tester recruitment, data analysis, etc.

Also, notes for commercial partnerships can’t be directly posted as brands wish.

Currently, the platform still goes through safety reviews, content reviews, and client reviews first. For content involving ad placements, it has to go through a separate special ad review.

If a brand wants to do marketing, I actually won’t only look for big influencers with millions of followers.

Most of the time,

it’s these vertical KOCs with around 5k, 10k, or even 30k followers that are way more convincing.

After all, the followers behind these KOCs are usually very precise specific groups: people with oily skin, fitness lovers, campers, pro photography enthusiasts, moms with young kids, gamers, etc.

This is also the biggest difference between REDnote’s marketing model and ads that only rely on traffic exposure.

X. REDnote Content Saving & Tool Extensions

A. Video & Image Downloader Tutorial

When many people see a favorite image or video on REDnote, their first reaction is to search for "REDnote no-watermark download" related information.

But these third-party download sites actually have quite high risks.

Common risks include: forced pop-up ads, requiring login to REDnote account, asking for cookie data, requesting to install unknown files, downloading fake APK files, and even direct redirection to phishing websites.

So my advice is: if you just want to rewatch it later, just use the platform’s "collection" function. If it’s your own posted content, prioritize using the saving methods allowed by the platform or your phone itself. If the creator explicitly marks that downloading is allowed, please only use it for personal use—never remove the watermark from others’ images and repost them.

Removing the watermark will never make the copyright of the work yours.

B. Chrome Extension Installation Steps

There are also many Chrome extensions that claim to help batch download images, save videos, export notes, or organize REDnote materials.

If you really need such tools for work, at least confirm three things before installation: First, check what permissions the extension requires. If an extension that "saves images" asks for "reading and modifying all website data you visit", be extra careful. Second, check the developer’s information and the extension’s update record. Don’t install tools that haven’t been updated for years just because of many positive reviews. Third, never give your account cookies to unknown tools.

The safety principle for Chrome extensions is simple:

Keep permissions as low as possible, and remove it immediately when you don’t need it after use.

And also

To be honest, if you just want to save content, browser bookmarks, Notion, Pocket, or the official save features on most platforms are more than enough. There’s absolutely no need to install an extension that can access all your browser data just to download a single image.

XI. REDnote Cybersecurity and Controversy Analysis

A. National Security Concerns and Government Prohibition Policies

The controversy surrounding REDnote in Taiwan is no longer just a vague “Chinese app cybersecurity concern” claim these days.

At the end of 2025, Taiwan’s regulatory authorities released a list of high-risk apps, and REDnote was categorized as a cybersecurity risk alongside several other Chinese apps. The government also warned the public to watch out for issues like sensitive data collection, storage permissions, device information access, and data transmission. According to current cybersecurity regulations, such high-risk software is not allowed on government-issued devices.

Additionally, on Taiwan’s Apple App Store, REDnote’s privacy label lists the types of data the app may process, including: location, contact information, contact lists, user-generated content, search history, device identifiers, and purchase records, among others.

This doesn’t mean that installing the app will definitely lead to data leaks—instead, you should understand that this type of social media app inherently collects a lot of user-related data, so you should be mindful of the risks when using it.

Once you’re on it, you can easily access all kinds of rich lifestyle-related information.

For this reason, I’d recommend the following:

If you don’t need precise location data, don’t keep location permissions enabled long-term.

If you don’t need the contact list feature to find friends, don’t grant contact access.

If you have the option to grant gallery access to only specific photos (instead of all), don’t give full access.

B. Scam Cases and Cybersecurity Risk Warnings

Another widely debated controversy around REDnote in Taiwan is the issue of scams.

According to official statistics, common scam patterns in the past include the following:

Secondhand item sales transactions.

Scams pretending to be Maihuobian customer service.

Scams offering to help cancel installment payments.

Fake investment and financial scams.

Contacting users initially on REDnote, then redirecting them to LINE or other external websites.

These types of scams have a very obvious common characteristic:

In the final step to steal money, they will almost always redirect you away from the original chat platform.

For example, someone might say:

“It’s hard to chat on REDnote—add me on LINE.”

Then they’ll send:

“Maihuobian Customer Service.”

“Bank Verification.”

“Remove Payment Restrictions.”

“Investment Group.”

If you see someone asking you to enter online banking credentials, credit card OTP codes, make a transfer, or use an ATM, stop all actions immediately.

XII. REDnote Official Information and Account Management

A. Privacy Policy and Customer Service Contact Channels

The supplier of REDnote’s official app is:

Xingin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

For the Android version, it will show “Xingyin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.” as the supplier.

If you encounter any of the following issues with the app:

Account is blocked.

Not receiving verification codes.

Real-name authentication issues.

Private messages can’t be sent.

Issues with purchasing products.

It’s recommended to first resolve these through the official process:

Settings → Help & Customer Service → Feedback

You can report issues through the channels above, and the latest App Store update notes still directly provide a link to this customer service entry.

Do not search for the following:

“REDnote manual unblock QQ.”

“REDnote internal customer service.”

“Pay to remove account risk control restrictions.”

The worse your account status is, the easier it is to become a target for secondary scams.

B. Account Settings and Content Rating Specifications

As of 2026, Taiwan’s App Store rates REDnote as:

13+

And notes that it contains:

User-generated content.

Instant messaging and chat features.

Health and wellness related topics.

Some content contains adult or suggestive themes.

Medical-related information.

It also has built-in age verification and content control mechanisms.

So parents shouldn’t assume that just because the platform has a ton of:

Travel guides.

DIY project shares.

Fashion styling.

Food reviews.

It’s automatically a learning app suitable for kids.

The platform’s recommendation algorithm adjusts based on what users watch.

The homepage adults see can be quite different from what teens see after using the app for a while.

Let's Summarize

From a pure product experience standpoint, I get why so many people open REDnote every single day.

What it’s really good at isn’t “better photos than Instagram” — it’s combining:

Community interaction.

Precise search function.

Various practical guides.

Authentic life experience shares.

Product reviews and recommendations.

Brand partnership content.

E-commerce shopping features.

All into a seemingly simple two-column waterfall-style interface.

Even when I use REDnote, it’s not just for pure entertainment.

Before taking a trip, I search for local attraction info.

Before buying tech products, I check other users’ pain-point stories.

When looking for restaurants, I first look at real user photos.

When I want to redecorate my room, I look for decor inspiration.

Even fitness routines, fashion tips, or how-to guides for work apps are organized into easy-to-understand notes by others.

That’s the biggest difference between it and Instagram.

Instagram is more like “scrolling through different people’s daily updates”.

REDnote is more like “finding solutions for your needs”.

But if you’re in Taiwan in 2026, you can’t ignore the other side of using REDnote.

As of September 2026, Taiwan is still under a year-long domain resolution suspension and related restrictions that started in December 2025.

During these restrictions, authorities have publicly clarified that these rules are to address fraud and cybersecurity concerns — this has absolutely nothing to do with whether the app itself is good or not.

So, I actually don’t recommend Taiwanese users download untrusted VPNs, cracked APKs, or weird tools that claim to “unlock REDnote for Taiwan” just to use the app.

If you really need those things, you can find them elsewhere: like travel guides, product reviews, fashion inspiration, food info, etc.

There are actually tons of alternative platforms you can use now: such as Google Search, Instagram, YouTube, Threads, Dcard, or various personal blogs — so many options.

If these restrictions are lifted in the future, or if REDnote is available in your region, it will still be a very content-rich and highly searchable lifestyle social platform.

And if you still want to use REDnote, remember these three super important tips:

Don’t take every “product recommendation post” as an objective review.

Never click external links shared by strangers, and never assume they’re official payment pages.

Don’t click “Allow” for every permission REDnote asks for without thinking.

REDnote is actually a fun and really useful platform, but because it understands your interests, shopping habits, and daily details so well, you have to be more careful about what personal information you share there.

Being able to search properly, compare prices, tell paid partnerships from real shares, and protect your account and personal data — that’s the truly mature and safe way to use REDnote in 2026.
